What kind of keyboard action is for you?

Many first-time keyboard buyers face the decision about what kind of keyboard "action" is best for them. Synths and portable keyboards have what is generally called "synth action". In synth action there's no weight or resistance when the keys are pressed down. The problem, of course, is that the player can never develop real piano playing technique. A real piano strikes the strings with an elaborate system of hammers, springs, and levers. Manufacturers have developed several different mechanisms that attempt to reproduce the feel of real piano keys. My current favorite is the Roland Fantom G-8. The weighted action does a superb job of replicating "real" piano action and Roland's "Ivory Feel" keyboard also reproduces the look and feel of real ivory.
