There is no harshness or flubbiness in the Shiba Drive's sonic character whatsoever. There is a slight midrange hump that helps you cut through the mix, but the sonic integrity of your guitar and pickups comes through loud and clear. The Shiba Drive can purr, sing, growl or scream depending on the amp's setup and the amount of signal you're feeding it from your guitar and pickups. Effects pedals typically take a lot of abuse. The boxes are milled out of solid aluminum billets with state-of-the-art CNC for meticulous fit and finish as well as impregnable protection for the components inside. Yes, these pedals are overbuilt like a tank and overengineered to the tilt. You can sense the amazing build quality when you put one in your hands. From the feel of the footswitch when you stomp on it to the feel of the knobs when you turn them, everything about these pedals oozes quality.
Ultimately, though, it's about the sound and musician-friendly features. Designed by long-time working musicians who are also product designers and engineers, Suhr focused on things that really matter to players who play out in live shows and record in demanding studio applications. Suhr left out the frills and a gaggle of switches and knobs that may seem like they offer versatility but only get in the way when you're trying to dial in the sound in your head. Suhr also added a very practical feature called FX-Link for players using MIDI or remote switching systems to turn pedals on and off without having to insert them into separate loop boxes. As their pedal line grows, this feature will become that much more useful for building a sophisticated rig without frustrating complexity. Speaking of features, all Suhr pedals also come with a battery monitor that measures the voltage of the battery when a cable is plugged in.
