In 1965 Martin introducted the D-35, a dreadnought which allowed Martin to utilize narrower sections of Brazilian rosewood than were normally used in a
D-size guitar. The three-piece-back D-35 was a brand new design and style, complete with fancier celluloid trim around the body and binding on the sides of the fretboard. The D-35 was an instant major success in the mid '60s, and remains so today.
Martin's Standard Series is the foundation of the entire line of Martin guitars. Historically, every instrument that Martin has built has evolved, in some degree, from the classic Martin designs, especially the Dreadnought. The large Dreadnought sized body, originated by Frank H. Martin and Oliver Hunt in 1916, is the most widely imitated guitar model in the world.
