Gurus Echosex 2 Binson Echorec Tube Delay

The classic and collectible Italian-made Binson Echorec was an echo/delay machine that turned up on many Pink Floyd (David Gilmour) recordings,   Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks", and many other classic recordings.

It had a distinct vintage tone and warm delay that resulted from using a metal drum instead of tape (like it's American cousin, the Echoplex). It was tube driven.

The folks at Gurus Amps (Italy) have designed a killer replica, albeit in a much smaller, pedal-sized enclosure. The Echosex 2 is also a tube-driven delay that sounds absolutely fantastic. The layout is clean- On the top row are controls for bass/treble, “age of damage,” and volume echo (dry/wet mix). Lower-row knobs control length of swell (feedback) and echo (time in ms.) To the side are DIP switches to choose the bypass mode (hard cutoff or spillover) and to set the input level for line or guitar. (Like the original Echorec, the Echosex 2 can serve as both stompbox and outboard studio effect/preamp.)

Part of the Echorec’s charm has to do with the way its capstan can become misshapen over time, producing an effect similar to tape warble. The Echosex nails this. While period technology limited the original Echorec to 300ms delays, the digital Echosex 2 providesup to 660ms. We highly recommend this rock solid, tape-sounding piece from Gurus Amps.

  • Dip switches to select input gain, from guitar to active guitar to keyboard, etc.
  • Switchable trails on or off

With so many excellent delays on the market I wasn't prepared to be impressed, but I was- and that's putting it mildly. Right away you can tell that this delay is tube driven- it is warm, exactly like ... Read More
